The primary cause of unhappiness is never the situation, but your thoughts around it.
- Eckhart Tolle

You can't just choose happiness, and I don't really like the message of "be happy".
That shit doesn't always come easy, and it can be quite demoralising for people who really struggle with this.
Like it's just a simple choice, but there must be something wrong with them if it's so easy for others.
However you can choose to cultivate happiness, and I promise there's a difference.
'Choosing happiness' is almost like sitting there wishing for things to get better while your house burns down around you...
But if you choose to cultivate happiness, you're committing to making choices and taking actions that will lead you towards happiness. And you will succeed sometimes and you might not succeed other times, which is normal.

I choose life... which means actively working towards making it full of happiness and joy, but being okay with it when it sometimes isn't. ✌🏼
